Retreat (The Getaway Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,272 ratings

Every once in a while, you need to get away from it all.

I was a woman on the edge, shaken and shattered after a breakup that felt like it tore my entire world apart.
My best friend, sick of watching me drown in misery and melancholy, harassed me until I agreed to go with her on a week-long wilderness retreat.

She promised days spent bonding and getting in touch with our inner bad-asses. It was supposed to be all about the two of us roughing it and making do with the bare minimum. She assured me we were going to be pushed to our limits in ways that were unimaginable. Neither one of us could have ever guessed just how right she was.

Nowhere in the glossy brochure did it say anything about the fact I was going to have to battle the insufferable but deliciously rugged and sexy trail guide instead of the elements. The brochure also forgot to mention the part that warned when you left civilization behind, there was no place to pack your inhibitions and fears.

I was told that I would be facing a week where the only thing I should expect was the unexpected. However, no one mentioned that I was going to have to fight for my life…and my heart as soon as I ventured into the unknown.

I was a pro at hiding from my feelings but when it came time to face a real threat, one that could change everything, I learned I was more of a no surrender, no retreat kind of girl.

Retreat is a standalone novel, the first in the Getaway series which centers on the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women that dare to love them.
These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

Well that was a roller coaster of a ride, can I have a not quite a cowboy please.

And I would have read your shopping list too...

I really enjoyed this story, somewhat different to your other work, but still so sexy, it had you reahing for more than chocolate and wine.

The path of tru love is not a very straight one, but with the right gentle persuasion love can be as wide as the mountain span in Montana, as high as the tallest building in San Fran and as explosive as the biggest 4th July celebrations.

We get a very insecure, unsure, introverted woman who had been hurt hard, being dragged to an outdoor adventure vacation. BUT she Leona, has a sassy streak, she gives in and goes along with Emrys to the Dude Rance, for a change of scenery, only to be disappointed that where they were was not wall to wall cowboys.

I loved how she was being put in her place immediately, how she actually enjoyed ruffling a certain hot sexy mans feathers.

The close bond between Leo and Em was unbreakable, they both really were there for each other in ways above and beyone the realms of friendship.

The Brothers: Cyrius, Sutton and Lane were sexy hot smoldering walking pieces of art, but with an extra chromasome - namely one for protection. They were very adept men, capable of handling their guests at the ranch, all three had very different personalities, but all had a unique sibling bond.

The Brooding older brother with a grudge to bear.
The protective middle brother with a fatherly edge to him
The cheeky younger brother with a penchant of poking the bear.

Absolutely adored how Leo and Cy were in total denial, but wern't afraid to take what they both wanted and whilst it all happened over a fairly short period of time, their story was one cery sexy, exhilarating and gripping thrill of a read

Two people who shouldnt fit, but worked so well, I was conjuring up ways to make them stay together after the vacation.

The vacation was one busy, thrilling edge of your seat suspense, and very hard to put down, you found yourself willing to finish to see how it all pans out, but also savouring this great and unique story.

Some parts were hard going with some very serious subject matter but told beautifully.

A fantastic 5 stars for a fantastic story, and I can't wait for the next story to make it's way to my kindle.

A brilliant surprise release from Jay Crownover! I always love it when one of your favorite authors release surprise books, where you have no expectations or preconceived ideas of what the book will be about or what it will contain. I didn't even read the blurb, I just went straight in... And I was not disappointed!

At the very start there is a warning that we may not like the heroine and to stick with her - well I absolutely loved her right from the get go!! I couldn't find fault with her at all.. Leo was sassy, a bit standoffish, but has had a pretty rubbish past with her ex, so has a number of trust issues and is lacking self-confidence, covering this up and protecting herself with her sharp words.

This is partly the reason why Leo's best friend in the world, Emrys has convinced her to go on this adventure trip on a ranch in the mountains of Wyoming! The ranch is run by 3 hot brooding cowboy brothers! And in this book we really get to know Cy Warner.

What can I say about Cy - he's big, brooding, sexy, mysterious, guarded and rather serious on the surface. But underneath all of that there is a lot more to him which we do learn and see more of the real him when he is with Leo.

Told in a single PoV from Leo's perspective we really get to see her thoughts and delve deeper into her mind and everything that goes on in this story - I do like the way it has been written. Her and Cy's relationship as it progresses throughout the book is brilliant - it was hot and steamy at times, but also very sweet and tender as well.

Because while Cy might not be what I imagined a cowboy to be, he sure as hell was what I'd always imagined a hero should be.

This book is filled to the brim with action, adventure, self discovery, camaraderie and experiences of a lifetime!! I did find there was a little lull for myself personally in the first third of the book, but it soon picked up again and by the end I was totally engrossed. I really look forward to the rest of this new series and seeing what Jay has in store for us from Sutton, Lane and of course Emrys!

5.0 out of 5 stars Something Different yet Amazing by a favorite author!!
Reviewed in India on 13 January 2017
This was a departure from the normal Jay Crownover books – no tattoos around, no double POV (which is honestly one of my favorite things about her books!) and not much dialogue – but this being a different did not mean that I didn’t adore this one like I adore her other books!!

A first POV book (and I really hate them!), this one actually ended up hooking me in right from the start – It’s is Leo’s voice that had me hooked right in; but mostly that had to do with the fact that I read Jay’s introduction first :P

Here’s the thing, when you have an author who goes out of her comfort zone and writes something different, I will always applaud her, but there are only a few of them who end up succeeding at it; Jay Crownover is one of them! Honestly, her talent is brilliant and I adored that this book of hers was fundamentally different from the previous ones, yet still had something that was quintessentially hers, made it all the more enjoyable!

Leora/Leo is a broken woman, not only by her past, but also by recent events – she has had everything of hers broken, her trust, her faith and most importantly her self-esteem! Having a best friend who adores her and wants her to move on, might seem like a herculean task, but it was endearing to watch Leo trying just for the sake of her best friend; now that’s the kind of friendships this author is known for and I am so glad that it didn’t change.

Leo is real, relatable; in fact, she has been you or me at some point in our lives, and no matter how rude or defensive she would become, I couldn’t let go of the soft spot that I had for her. And she grows, phenomenally in through the course of her journey, not just for or with a man, but for herself and at the end, I was proud of the woman she was.

“Love isn’t logical or reasonable. Our hearts make no sense.”

Cyrus Walker, is not your usual cowboy, in fact, he rarely wears Stetsons or hats that I have come to associate with cowboys in books (for I have never seen one in reality!). But what he definitely, abrupt, brooding, a man of few dirty words and with a sweet centre – everything I require to fall for a hero in a book and boy did I fall for him! It took the first meeting to fall for him, even through Leo’s eyes for she can’t really hide her own fascination with him.

He is abrasive, and prickly but the moment he opens about his past – boy does it tug at your hearts. It isn’t an easy past; and it is easy to why he isn’t the most approachable of the heroes. It was also heart-warming to watch him get closer to Leo and let her heal him, and vice versa! Definitely a couple worthy of belonging to each other!

There is also more than a hint of suspense, which again is different from her previous books – and in a wonderful way! Loved the picturizations and eloquent descriptions of this new place – which somehow did become a little stagnant as the book wore on (only reason why this doesn’t get a 5 star rating from me!), but I enjoyed the journey that Jay took us on and honestly the secondary characters are worth every second spent on them, and I am dying to see where the series goes next!

Take a chance on this book, if you are an old fan of Jay, you won’t be disappointed! And give a chance to the western style romance, if you are new to Jay as well! Definite recommendation from me!

“The goodbye doesn’t matter. It’s everything that came before the goodbye that is important.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Fall back in love with cowboys in this 5 star read
Reviewed in Canada on 29 December 2016
Surprise book by Jay Crownover? Hell Yeah! I was sooo happy when she announced this to us that I was jumping up and down with excitement.

When I woke up this morning, I could finally buy it, started it and finished in less than a day. You get sucked right into the story from the very first lines.

The reason for that is because Jay created characters that just get to you. Leo is a girl with a broken heart, a broken trust and a broken confidence. She got burned badly and her best friend has gotten her to agreed to an outdoor adventure for a change of scenery. If she didn't expect much from this trip besides making her best friend happy, she quickly realized she was wrong when she met Cyrus.

Cyrus is the not-so-cowboy she butts head most of the beginning of the book and rest of the book if we are honest lol, but the chemistry between them is off the chart. From the beginning you can tell that something is growing between them and I loved that both of them sort of had closed-hearts because as the story went on, they slowly opened to each other as they spilled drops of their pasts.

Both have experiences that can be related to everyone and I think that's what made this book such an easy and entertaining read. Even if you didn't live exactly what they did, you can easily see yourself through experiences that burned you. Leo's thoughts and reactions spoke to me in volume and I didn't even live the kind of burn she went through but her fears can be interpreted for so many different heartaches. Cyrus' past explained so much of his attitude and you just want him to get the happiness he deserves. And I believe every girl should get a Cyrus. Jay like always made sure we would all be swooning over her men.

I really liked how Leo and Cy both grew somewhat in the book. Jay showed with their growth how it's not always easy to put the past and doubts behind, but if you work at it, it's always worth it in the end.

Jay created not only main characters we can relate to and understand, but she also created other characters that were filling out the story perfectly. Some you will love from the get-go and others that will slowly get to you. I don't think this story would have been the same without them and I'm really looking forward to seeing them again in the future books.

This is a new series by Jay that I'm just looking forward to read the next ones to come. I'm highly recommend this book. You will find it all in this series for your reading pleasure.
