His to Protect: A Bodyguard Bad Boys/Masters and Mercenaries Novella (Lexi Blake Crossover Collection Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 994 ratings

Talia Shaw has spent her adult life working as a scientist for a big pharmaceutical company. She’s focused on saving lives, not living life. When her lab is broken into and it's clear someone is after the top secret formula she’s working on, she turns to the one man she can trust. The same irresistible man she turned away years earlier because she was too young and naive to believe a sexy guy like Shane Landon could want her.

Shane Landon’s bodyguard work for McKay-Taggart is the one thing that brings him satisfaction in his life. Relationships come in second to the job. Always. Then little brainiac Talia Shaw shows up in his backyard, frightened and on the run, and his world is turned upside down. And not just because she’s found him naked in his outdoor shower, either.

With Talia's life in danger, Shane has to get her out of town and to her eccentric, hermit mentor who has the final piece of the formula she’s been working on, while keeping her safe from the men who are after her. Guarding Talia's body certainly isn't any hardship, but he never expects to fall hard and fast for his best friend’s little sister and the only woman who’s ever really gotten under his skin.

The Lexi Blake Crossover Collection features a new novel by Lexi Blake and five books by some of her favorite writers:

Lexi Blake - Close Cover
Larissa Ione - Her Guardian Angel
J. Kenner - Justify Me
Corinne Michaels - Say You Won't Let Go
Carly Phillips - His to Protect

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I HOPED FOR FROM THIS CROSSOVER EVENT! (Yes, shouty capitals!) This is my favorite of the novellas in this series. It felt like a complete story, I didn’t feel like I was missing a ton of information about the series I wasn’t familiar with, and it included the McKay-Taggart world in a meaningful way.

His to Protect is listed as book 2.5 in Carly Phillips’ Bodyguard Bad Boys series and falls in the same timeline as the sixteenth book in Lexi Blake’s Masters and Mercenaries series. This book can be read as a complete standalone. His to Protect is written in third-person semi-omniscient perspective, alternatively following Talia and Shane’s thoughts.

I freaking loved Talia and Shane. They were both so strong, so independent, so confident in who they were. Having two characters who are completely comfortable in their own skin and lot in life seems rare in the world of romance and having two characters like that find one another made me giddy. I loved that they wanted the same things in life and were both completely honest with the fact they weren’t in a place where they thought a relationship was important or feasible.

Though this book was a novella, it didn’t feel rushed or lacking in any way. The plot moved quickly and, while the action was intense, I felt like plenty of time was spent on building the connection between Talia and Shane. In a novella that can be a hard balance to find and Ms. Phillips did an amazing job of striking it.

This is my first time reading Carly Phillips, and if this is indicative of her normal writing, I’m a huge fan. Her prose was engaging and exact. I loved that she didn’t include a bunch of superfluous information for the sake of filling pages. I was wholly impressed with every part of this book, from characterization to plot to style, and look forward to reading more of Ms. Phillips’ work.

Whew! WHAT. A. RIDE! This book held me completely captive. It was action-packed, had the romance and had a smart heroine. What more could you want!? This was another great second chance romance. Shane is Talia's brother's good friend. They knew each other growing up, but haven't seen each other in years. Talia is running for her life and runs into Shane's arms. (Literally! You'll see what I mean when you read this book) :) The action is throughout this whole book and I couldn't put it down. Shane is keeping her safe and they also have a chance to catch up. While the danger is always on their heels, they can't ignore the chemistry between them! I didn't want to put this book down and I loved the romance happening between them! There was one unbelievable thing that happened, and you'll see what that is when you get to that part in the book, but it was easy to get lost in this story and I highly recommend it!

This novella is part of Lexi Blake's Crossover Collection from her Masters & Mercenaries series. I have never read any of the books in the original series, but it is not needed to enjoy this story.

Talia Shaw is a scientist for a big pharmaceutical company and is working on a new formula that could change people's lives. Imagine her surprise when someone tries to break into her lab. Talia knows they are after her formula and she decides to hide and calls her brother. He tells her to head to Shane Landon's house to hide, since he is a body guard. Talia is hesitant to seek help from the one man she has always longed for, but at least she knows she can trust him. As Talia shows up at Shane Landon's house, she is very surprised to catch him showering outside, and all naked!

Knowing that Shane needs to get Talia to safety, they have to swing by her apartment first to get her work that is safely hidden and then get her to her mentor who has the rest of the work. Of course on the way they run into all kinds of trouble.

As Talia and Shane are spending more time together, things quickly heat up. After an explosive, action packed ending, these two finally get their happy ending. This was a fun, and quick moving story and both of the characters were really fun.

This was a terrific read. I could not put it down. It was fast moving and the characters were interesting and had a great backstory. Talia is a scientist for a pharmaceutical company that she found a breakthrough medication that others don’t want her to have so she needs protection which brings her bac to Shane, her brothers best friend and her crush from their childhood, who is a bodyguard for McKay-Tagart. When they go on the run they find out they both still have chemistry and both decide to just have what time they have together. But somehow whoever is after Talia they keep finding them. There is always something being going on in this book. Thee was so many twists and turns and the ending was great. Carly Phillips did not disappoint in this book. I highly recommend this read.

They have known each other for years. But after one kiss in high school they went separate ways. Now she is in trouble and his job as a bodyguard comes in handy. Keeping her safe will be a daunting task. Especially when somehow the bad guys keep finding them no matter what they do to keep them away.

Carly Phillips has been one of my go-to authors for over a year now and she never fails to disappoint. I am also a fan of Lexi Bake’s early Master and Mercenaries books, so when I read that there was going to be a little “cross over” with Carly Phillips writing a story in the M&M world I was very keen to read it.

Talia Shaw is a keen and super talented scientist who has developed a cure for a disease which could cost big pharmaceutical companies a lot of money and when she is targeted at her place of work, Talia’s big brother sends her to his best friend - and Talia’s old high school crush - Shane Landon. Shane is now a bodyguard working at McKay-Taggart (**squee** crossover!!) and once he realises Talia needs his protection, it’s all systems go.

What follows is a fairly fast paced, action packed story that is filled with plenty of chemistry and heat between the two leads. Carly always writes books that have a great balance between plot and steamy sex scenes and “His to Protect” is no different. And I absolutely loved that we got an update about Ian Taggart from Lexi Blake’s M&M series because I always had a soft spot for the head of McKay-Taggart.

This is a great read and I expected nothing less from the talented Carly Phillips. Definitely one to add to your TBR!!

An enjoyable cross over story, with plenty of action. Shane and Talia made a great couple and enjoyed the links to McKay Taggart.
